Walmart has been looking into enhancing transparency and traceability within its supply chain for years but recently discovered Blockchain technology as a potential solution for tracing food items.
Walmart has been attempting to increase transparency and traceability in the food system but has yet to be successful. An outbreak of a food-borne disease can take days or weeks to identify its source, making improved traceability essential for timely action and protecting farmers' livelihoods. Therefore, Walmart utilized a traceability system based on Hyperledger Fabric.
Walmart designed an application to streamline its processes. Data attributes were uploaded onto a blockchain system, and suppliers used new labels with a web-based interface.
Walmart is now tracing over 25 products from five suppliers using Blockchain built atop Hyperledger Fabric; these include mangoes, strawberries, leafy greens, meat and poultry (chicken/livestock), dairy products (yogurt/almond milk), as well as multi-ingredient items like packaged salads and baby food.
